Kolb down to three

In early August, offensive lineman Khamrone Kolb from Burke (Va.) Lake Braddock said he cut his list of 10 scholarship offers down to five: Penn State, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Connecticut and North Carolina.

Less than three weeks later, Kolb has again narrowed his choices.

“It is pretty much down to three schools,” Kolb said on Sunday evening.  “It will be Penn State, Connecticut or Virginia.”

Kolb is torn between the three at this point.

“I’d like to decide, but I think I’ll need to take official visits,” Kolb said.  “I’ll try to take them to all three schools.  I’ll try to take them during the season.  I’d like to make it to a game at each school.”

Asked to comment on each school, Kolb began with Penn State.  He spoke last week with Nittany Lions assistant Larry Johnson.

“Penn State is Penn State,” Kolb said.  “It is pretty easy to explain why I’d like to go there.  They have other offensive line (commitments), but I think they still need an offensive tackle.

“Virginia is close to home.  The academics are second to none among the schools I’m considering.  They have been recruiting me since the beginning when I was a sophomore.

“Connecticut is sort of a surprise to me.  I went up there with my dad in the spring and watched a spring practice.  I really liked it there.  And one of my coaches is an alumnus.”

When asked who his favorite would be at this point, Kolb said, “Nothing really stands out enough for me to name a favorite right now.”

The 6-foot-6 and 300-pound Kolb has been a varsity starter since the beginning of his sophomore season and has played every position on both sides of the offensive line except center.  Kolb has also played tight end, but will play on the offensive line at the next level, likely as a tackle.

Kolb has visited Penn State twice, including the Blue-White Spring Game.  He has been impressed on both of his trips to State College and is looking forward to another visit.

“I’m going to the Ohio State game,” Kolb said.  “That will probably be my official visit.”

Kurelic’s Comment:  I think Kolb ends up at Penn State or Virginia, but which way he goes is impossible to predict at this point.
