Detroit (Mich.) Renaissance linebacker Lawrence Thomas is one of the top five juniors in the state of Michigan.  Thomas started at both middle linebacker and tight end during his sophomore season.  He made 77 tackles and had five sacks.

The 6-foot-4 and 235-pound Thomas, who runs the 40-yard dash in 4.6 seconds, takes on blockers and stays on his feet well.  He bench presses 250 pounds.

Thomas has a verbal scholarship offer from Michigan State.  He is looking forward to receiving a number of others - including one from the Nittany Lions.

“UCLA said they are going to offer,” Thomas said.  “Alabama, Colorado and Penn State are supposed to offer.”

Tuesday was the first day college coaches were allowed to send out written scholarship offers.

“My coach is going to see if any come in his mailbox (today),” Thomas said.

The Nittany Lions began showing interest in Thomas during the spring.

“They came to my school,” Thomas said.  “They saw my highlight tape.”

The interest between Penn State and Thomas is mutual.

“Penn State has a good academic program,” Thomas said.  “They have a good football organization.  I see them on TV.  They are one of the top schools.  Their linebackers go to the NFL.”

When asked to name the schools he is interested in, it didn’t take Thomas long to name Penn State.

“I’m interested in Penn State, UCLA, Michigan State, Iowa, Notre Dame and Ohio State,” he said.

Kurelic’s Comment:  Thomas is certainly someone to keep an eye on in regards to a Penn State scholarship offer.  I don’t think it necessarily comes this week, but it could come at some point.  If it does, Penn State might be at the top of Thomas’ list.
