State College vs. Columbus

All signs continue to point towards a Big Ten recruiting battle between Penn State and Ohio State for the services of junior tight end target Ben Koyack from Oil City, Pa.

Koyack visited the two schools earlier this summer and has scholarship offers on the table from both.  After the second of the two visits, a trip to Columbus to visit the Buckeyes on July 22, Koyack said the two were tied at the top of his list.

That has not changed.

“Those are still my two favorites,” Koyack said on Thursday night.  “It’s still pretty even.”

Koyack will attend the USC at Ohio State game on Sept. 12 and the Ohio State at Penn State game on Nov. 7.

“Those are the only two visits I’m positive of right now,” Koyack said.

When asked about the Nittany Lions having a commitment from tight end Kevin Haplea for their 2010 recruiting class, Koyack said, “They said something about not signing as many tight ends this year because they want to sign me next year.  But I’m not sure exactly how many they are going to sign.”

Koyack has close to 20 scholarship offers.  His list includes Penn State, Ohio State, West Virginia, Pitt, Florida, Wisconsin, Boston College, Maryland, Virginia Tech and North Carolina State.  After the Nittany Lions and Buckeyes, West Virginia and Notre Dame round out Koyack’s top four at this point.

The 6-foot-5 and 230-pound Koyack caught 48 passes during his sophomore season and scored 10 times.  He is one of the top five juniors in the Keystone State.

Koyack and his teammates have a scrimmage against Northwestern tonight, then open the regular season at home against Meadville on Friday, Sept. 4.

Kurelic’s Comment:  Often when a prospect says he doesn’t have a favorite, he really does.  I don’t get that feeling from talking to Koyack or those close to him.  I think his decision will come down to Penn State or Ohio State and I think it will be a very difficult decision for Koyack.
