Joe Paterno and his staff are using all avenues to land the best possible 2010 recruiting class.  Their efforts include the junior college ranks.

Larry Johnson is pursuing Gulf Coast Community College (Miss.) defensive tackle James Carmon.  The 6-foot-7 and 360-pound Carmon is from Baltimore (Md.) City College, the same high school as Penn State wide receiver commitment Adrian Coxson, who Johnson has also recruited.

Carmon is in his second year at Gulf Coast CC.  This season, Gulf Coast is 3-1 and Carmon has played well.

Carmon has scheduled two official visits and one of them is to Penn State.

“My first official visit is Ole Miss Oct. 10 when they play Alabama,” Carmon said.  “Then I have Penn State (Nov. 7) when they play Ohio State.”

Carmon is planning to take all five official visits before he selects a college.

“I’ll set one up with South Florida,” Carmon said.  “I have one with Mississippi State when they play Florida (Oct. 24).  I’ll get one more too.”

Carmon has scholarship offers from all four schools.  He said he does not have a favorite and is looking forward to his first trip to State College.

“I talked to Larry Johnson about a week or so ago,” Carmon said.  “I’ve never been to Penn State, but I’ve always watched them on T.V.  They always have a good team.”

Carmon, who plans to attend the LSU at Mississippi State game on Saturday, will have three years to play two when he gets to his new school.

Kurelic’s Comment:  Between Sharrif Floyd, Mike Thornton and Carmon, the Nittany Lions stand a good chance to land one.  The No. 1 target has to be Floyd.
