DePaola aims to continue family tradition

Football runs deep in junior Vince DePaola's family.

His older brothers, Andrew and Nick, both currently play for Rutgers. But the tailback/safety out of Hereford (Md.) High School said he might just set a precedent with his school choice.

"I really like Penn State, South Carolina, North Carolina and Maryland," he said Thursday night, adding he's also --- of course --- looking at the Scarlet Knights.

He hasn't had any offers yet, but he's already visited Maryland and Rutgers several times this season. He plans on visiting Penn State's campus by the summer.

The 6-foot, 190 pound athlete who also sees time at linebacker has been to Happy Valley before, however. When one of his brothers attended a camp in Beaver Stadium, he decided to tag along --- even if he was just in junior high.

"I kind of see it as being similar to where I live. It seemed like home to me," he said, explaining the scenery --- the mountains, the trees, the environment --- resembled his neighborhood in Parkton, Md.

He said his favorite position is running back. But he'll play anywhere as long as he's on the field. ("I just want to play," he said)

His dream of earning a spot on a Division I football squad came earlier than most. When his brother Andrew --- a fifth-year senior at Rutgers --- received a lot of attention in high school, Vince said he knew he could follow in his footsteps.

"I know it's going to be tough," Vince DePaola said. "When you get to that level, it's your whole life. And I'm ready for that."
