Thornton spurns PSU, picks 'Dawgs

Defensive tackle Mike Thornton (Stone Mountain, Ga./Stephenson) has announced his college choice, doing so moments ago at a National Signing Day ceremony at Stephenson High School.

Thornton has selected Georgia over scholarship offers from Penn State and Kentucky, his other two finalists.  He made official visits to all three schools and had many other scholarship offers as well.

Thornton took his official visit to Penn State the weekend of Nov. 7.

Penn State assistants Kermit Buggs and Larry Johnson recruited Thornton and battled to the end, but fell short.

Thornton was a part of a huge ceremony at his school this morning in which over 20 Stephenson seniors are signing National Letters of Intent.

The 6-foot-1 and 273-pound Thornton is one of the top defensive tackle prospects in the South and was the last prospect Joe Paterno was hoping to add to his 2010 recruiting class.

Kurelic’s Comment:  Thornton’s decision was no surprise.  The Nittany Lions made a good run, but fell short to the home-state Bulldogs.  However, even without Thornton, Paterno has landed the No. 1 recruiting class in the Big Ten and a Top 10 class nationally.
